Overview

ReallyONE, a real estate broker founded and operated by a group of veteran agents, partnered with Facet Digital to re-imagine their brand and give life to their vision of an all-new web application meant to disrupt the real estate industry by automating the process of buying and selling real estate online and charging sellers significantly lower commission fees totaling only 1%.

The Backstory

ReallyONE was founded by a family leadership team that has been in the real estate game for nearly three decades. Their vision is to disrupt the real estate industry the way e-Trade did for stock brokerages and Expedia did for travel agencies. They want to automate the process of buying and selling homes online in a day and age where the tech savvy customer has all the tools and know-how to do their own research, and doesn’t feel the need to pay 6% commission for an agent to fill out paperwork for them.

According to ReallyONE CEO, Sam Owens, “The Internet has taken much of the guesswork out of buying a home. Online sites allow you to take virtual tours and gather tons of data so the decision is generally made before you preview the home. A Realtor’s traditional role does not apply in most of today’s market.”

ReallyONE provides a secure cost-saving opportunity for the tech-savvy real estate customer. It’s time for the real estate industry to move into the modern age.

The Challenge

ReallyONE needed to design, architect, and build a simple web-based application that would allow a novice computer user to enter property data and, with automated guidance, get their home listed and sold, while making sure all parties were compliant and met expectations. The ReallyONE team needed an end-to-end product development partner that could understand their domain knowledge, translate their requirements into a streamlined online workflow, wrap it in modern web best-practices, and launch it.

The backend technology would need to be built for rapid scalability without over-engineering and breaking their startup budget. Market conditions demanded a short launch timeline for supporting seller transactions in time to catch a hot seller’s market that was building up. Lean planning dictated the need to prove market validation on the biggest leap-of-faith assumption: that sellers would handle certain tasks themselves, without a live agent, such as uploading property photos and submitting their own listing applications, in exchange for savings thousands of dollars in commissions.

Facet Digital’s technical team would need to integrate with many legacy third-party systems like MLS services, county tax records, and title/escrow companies. Designing modern software to seamlessly integrate with an aging industry that has been doing real estate the same way for over a century would be no trivial task. Branding a compelling user experience on a small budget would not be easy when competing for mind-share against established online players with multimillion dollar design budgets and a high bar for UX.

Our Approach

The Facet team members were not domain experts in real estate at the beginning of this project. Fortunately, we have a disciplined discovery process that enabled us to quickly ramp up the domain knowledge needed to build out the initial feature definition for ReallyONE’s MVP (Minimum Viable Product). After a series of “war room” discovery sessions with the ReallyONE founders, we were able to identify all the steps in the workflow for closing a real estate transaction. Through a collaborative process of detailed wire-framing, pixel-perfect design mockups, and user storyboarding, Facet designer, Leif Jensen and team were able to produce a compelling product story and feature set for Facet engineers Jeremy Groh and Scott W. Bradley to architect to. This “Phase 1″ discovery process was the key to critical knowledge transfer, empowering Facet with enough domain knowledge to automate the minimum set of real estate transactions that were needed to prove out the market viability of the product.

By creating a modular software architecture that could connect custom-developed software services, third-party technologies, and human input/output, we were able to take a “man behind the curtain” approach to keeping the launch budget lean. Certain tasks can be managed behind the scenes by a designated agent – all unbeknownst to the user – until the business performance indicators identify which system components need to be automated to cut costs and improve operational efficiency. The theory is that when the agents behind the curtain become too busy to handle the manual workload, this is an indicator that the business is bringing in enough revenue to fund its own further development to automate these areas and enable future growth.

“The Facet team had a process in place for gleaning domain knowledge through a calculated exercise of thorough questioning and mind-mapping that gave us the confidence to know they would get it right.” –Sam Owens, CEO of ReallyONE

Product development commenced using the Kanban methodology with a focus on efficient, short delivery cycles and tight feedback loops. Post-launch, the same process is used to rapidly adapt to market feedback with the just-in-time delivery that is the hallmark of the Lean Software development philosophy.

The Result

Over the years, sites like Priceline, E-Trade, Expedia, and more recently, Uber and AirBnB have provided a means for the consumer to take more control and save significant amounts on the middle-man in their respective industries. Using traditional, time-tested real estate best practices combined with modern, efficient technology solutions, ReallyONE’s online system guides buyers and sellers through everything from listing your home on 1000s of real estate websites to signing the final closing forms.

This MVP release focused on the needs of the tech-savvy homeowner, to safely navigate the home-sales process with automated technology, backed by the watchful eye of a licensed, experienced broker, all while saving 5% commission fees when compared to traditional brokers.

Home sellers have a powerful system that steps them through everything from listing their home to signing the final closing forms in ways that are simple and intuitive – all within our application. We’re making it easy for home buyers who know what they’re looking for to find a home and quickly move through the process of scheduling property visits, inspections, asking questions, and closing the paperwork. Either side of the transaction gets a streamlined feel of modern online tools, the market reach of premier MLS services, and the comfort of knowing that there is always a live real estate agent behind the scenes auditing your transactions to make sure they are complete, correct, and optimal.

Overview

Supra Boats, manufacturer of high-performance, luxury water sports boats, partnered with Facet Digital to redesign and develop their boat colorizer application that allows customers to customize and purchase their perfect Supra masterpiece. This colorizer would need to optimized to look great on both the supraboats.com website and the digital catalog app for iOS and Android tablets being designed and developed in parallel by Facet Digital.

The Backstory

Supra Boats has been building luxury water sports boats in Tennessee since 1981 – beginning with competition waterski boats and later expanding into high-performance boats for wakeboarding and wakesurfing. Their stated goal in marketing over the past few years has been to boost their online presence and to push the state-of-the-art using modern tools such as tablet devices for boat show demonstrations, interactivity, and lead-generation. Enter Facet Digital.

Facet first started working with Supra on a smaller project: building a bespoke iPad app that showcased their unique surf technology called Supra Boats Swell Surf System. Building on the success of that effort, Facet took on a much larger project, developing a digital catalog for the entire 2015 model line for both Apple and Android devices. This project entailed redesigning Supra’s current Flash-based boat colorizer into an easy-to-use standalone colorizer that runs beautifully on both supraboats.com and tablet devices, using only embeddable web technologies.

Supra Boats is where passion meets precision. This step-by-step colorizer walks customers through every fine detail of this luxury boat model line.

The Challenge

The project came with some technical challenges and a lean budget. The colorizer needed to run on their existing website and on the upcoming Supra Boats 2015 Digital Catalog. With four boat models and nearly a thousand color panel options, the color selection process needed to be really simple. We also needed the ability to share the designs over a user’s social networks, email to a friend, or send it to a Supra boat dealer to be built out – without requiring backend server development. We decided the colorizer was going to be statically baked into the digital catalog app, since internet connectivity at boat trade shows is either sparse or nonexistent. With so many images to package within the app, we had to be clever about keeping download size small without degrading the visual quality.

Boat show season was quickly approaching, final touches to the model line were being worked out, and studio photography sessions were scheduled; this project needed sharp project and resource management to hit its deadlines.

Our Approach

With four boats, three views, and nearly 170 different color panels options for each view, establishing efficient asset management was crucial to the budget and timeline. First, we needed to establish a solid spec for each color option and model, which was done by producing diagrams of each panel, and spreadsheets to identify color options and custom color-matching rules. Color checklists were setup in Trello using the filenames needed for each panel and color option.

We then produced wireframe and pixel-perfect mockups to establish the user flow and visual aesthetic throughout the colorizing process. We decided on a 1024×768 aspect ratio to have a clean edge-to-edge look within the digital catalog, while also embedding nicely within Supra’s existing website. Once we nailed down the look and feel with Supra, we began the somewhat mind-numbing task of cutting studio images into individual panels and colorizing them in Photoshop.

With over a thousand images that needed to be cut and colorized, developing automated shortcuts was a must for this project. We labeled each panel layer and color on the Photoshop layer and developed a custom export script to automatically save each image with the right filename structure for direct integration with the code.

We built the visual display and interactivity as a static website using a tool called Middleman, which enabled us to rapidly develop the HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to be embedded into the website and catalog apps using modern pre-compiler tools such as Haml, Sass, and CoffeeScript. By integrating third-party tools like Cloudinary, we were able to dynamically generate high-definition composite images of the user’s final masterpiece to be shared with their friends or a Supra dealer.

The Result

The Supra Boats colorizer is a fun, interactive tool to get customers engaged in the creative process of building their own boat that they can personally identify with. Within minutes, anyone from 4 years old to 80 can easily design their dream boat and share it with their friends or local Supra dealer. Its versatility makes it look great on both desktop and tablet devices.

Since launch, we’ve seen some fun, unexpected uses of the colorizer –people have even made boats in their favorite team colors before games and posted them on social networks. It’s also a great sales tool for dealers to produce boat designs with customers right at the dealership and print out the specs on-site.

Overview

New York Times best-selling authors, Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott partnered with Facet Digital to develop a marriage assessment web application based on the ‘Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts’ book and video series.

The Backstory

More than a million couples have used the award-winning Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts (SYMBIS for short) book and video series in preparation for a strong and passionate marriage. Drs. Les and Leslie Parrott (L&L) envisioned an opportunity to apply their proven strategies into an application that provides couples with a deeper understanding of each other. “We wanted to take our experience counseling couples and create an assessment app to prepare couples for lifelong love, and we need a development partner to craft our vision into a compelling application that is useful for engaged couples and facilitators,” says Dr. Les Parrott.

The world’s most practical pre-marriage assessment. Grounded in research and infused with practical applications, SYMBIS guarantees edge-of-your-seat engagement with couples.

The Challenge

The Les and Leslie team knew they needed a partner; one that understood their vision, had the skill-set and methods to build a high quality product within a short 10-week development period. The app needed to meet the needs of the engaged couple, the assessment facilitator, and the SYMBIS administrator overseeing the entire platform. It also needed to scale without over-engineering.

Our Approach

For two weeks, L&L Executive Director Ryan Farmer and Facet designer Leif Jensen closely collaborated on the design phase, wire-framing every detail of the experience until they had a solid MVP that met their budget and release schedule. The wireframes created during this phase, which we call “Phase I”, produced the necessary information for Facet’s engineers to create a database ERD, network architecture diagrams, cloud operations cost estimates, software stack specifications, and a detailed cost estimate for front and backend development. They also produced some pixel-perfect mockups of the application, which allowed the team to start getting customer feedback, and even some pre-sales.

At Facet Digital, we highly recommend doing a thorough Phase I design exercise. It reduces overall project risk by serving as a compass that always keeps the entire team pointed toward the destination. Having wireframes at this stage allowed Ryan to demo the experience to early prospects, recording usability feedback and validation, and even closing pre-sales with many of them.

The Result

The assessment application focuses on couples, facilitators, and the SYMBIS admin users who track all the transactions within the product. It usually takes a couple about 30 minutes each to complete the assessment from their desktop or tablet. Then a facilitator prints out a personalized assessment report and counsels the couples, providing countless insights about the relationship. “Facet took our vision and ideas and crafted them into an application that was simple to use and understand, yet powerful enough to scale for success,” says Ryan Farmer, Executive Director.

Facilitators use the application for assessment counselor training, certification, and managing the couples in their care. Quality is preserved in this ecosystem by spoon-feeding SYMBIS facilitator curriculum in digestible increments where certification can be done at one’s own pace. Couples take a 30-minute assessment and walk away with beautifully personalized insights and road map to make their marriage everything it was meant to be. Helping engaged and newly married couples just got easier. You’ll love the depth and breadth of this sophisticated instrument.

We could have never built this application without them. I am so glad we chose Facet Digital. We’re going to be working together for a long time.

Overview

Christopher Burgess, founder of Prevendra and former executive within the CIA, chose Facet Digital as his trusted end-to-end product development team to bring to life his vision of an easy-to-use online life-planning product that could store your most sensitive information with an unprecedented level of security.

The Backstory

We all have bank accounts, physical assets, credit cards, investments, wills, documents, mortgages, and an ever-expanding online footprint made up social networks, shopping accounts, blogs, etc. How could your family possibly be able to manage all of these things, and know what you want done with them, in the event of your extended absence or death?

“During my time with the CIA I had to travel near and far, often times with minimal advance notice. Without advance notice, it was difficult to create lists of accounts and access protocols for my family in the event something came up during my absence or if something happened to me. What we did was create a system of red folders for use by my wife.”, explains Christopher Burgess. He goes on to explain a sophisticated protocol for keeping his physical red folders organized and secured through a manual two-factor system that he conceived during his time as an intelligence officer…and thus the idea for Red Folder was born.

According to Burgess, “The type of information you need to store for your family and loved ones in the event of your unavailability is a treasure trove for hackers and identity thieves. In order to bring my system into an online product, it was critically important to partner with a deeply technical product development team that could architect and build a rock-solid cybersecurity system and still make it look and feel like a consumer product.”

Peace of mind tomorrow. Prepared today. When the inevitable emergency arrives, everything is in one place. In your Red Folder.

The Challenge

Prevendra knew they needed to partner with an end-to-end product team — one with the experience to manage the entire process from concept to delivery, that knew how to keep the budget lean without cutting corners on security and scalability, all while designing a simple user interface for exposing potentially complex concepts to a non-technical demographic. The system would need to stand up to the scrutiny of industry-leading security experts, and the app would need to meet the usability needs of both the high-tech user and the elderly non-technical user alike. And it all needed to be built quickly on a lean startup budget.

Our Approach

After a few initial face-to-face “war room” discovery sessions with Christopher, Facet co-founders Leif and Scott got to work building out the initial feature definition for Red Folder’s MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Through a collaborative process of detailed wire-framing, pixel-perfect design mockups, and user storyboarding, Leif and Christopher were able to produce a compelling product story and feature set for Facet engineers Scott and Jeremy to architect to. This “Phase 1” discovery process was key in framing the problem scope such that the software architects could design a technology blueprint that would enable the specified feature with a focus on a rock-solid security system as it’s foundation. Product development commenced using the Kanban methodology with a focus on efficient just-in-time delivery and fast iteration and feedback cycles. Post-launch, the same process is used to rapidly adapt to market feedback.

The Result

The result is a leading-edge security architecture that has been blessed by Fortune 500 Chief Security Officers and crypto-security pundits as “as bulletproof as it gets”, with an end-to-end user experience primarily targeted at non-technical users in a way that hides the complexity of the security system while still providing the utmost peace of mind.

Users are guided through a sophisticated on-boarding process, covering numerous security details with ease, and within minutes are educated about what types of information they should store, and how it stays secure through Red Folder’s patent-pending authentication and authorization mechanism. “Designees” — individuals you trust to access your information on your behalf in case of emergency — can use the site for free, and can only access your accounts using their own identity according to your policy using an innovative time-lock protocol. You never need to share your password with them.

Customers have been quick to realize the benefits of Red Folder, and have been spreading the word by inviting their Designees. Channel partners such as estate attorneys, financial planners, insurance companies, HR departments, and military/law-enforcement organizations have been raving about the benefit of the Red Folder system to their clientele.

Highlights
  • Automated user on-boarding, walking new customers through normally complex setup features.
  • Contextual user education, covering new technology concepts like two- factor authentication, encryption keys, and designee invitation.
  • Measurable conversion funnels.
  • Channel partner and affiliate tracking and reporting.
  • Bulletproof security.

Facet developed not only a great user experience, but a secure data storage and access architecture that was designed to pass the highest of security tests.
